Rounds: 1 interview (after Group Discussion)
Topics Asked: Technical (Strength of Materials, projects, winter training, minor project, research paper), Guesstimate, Behavioral (teamwork, aggression in team, pitching ideas, why ExxonMobil, career preference, patience/scolding someone)
This candidate, a mechanical engineering major from NIT Bhopal, was interviewed on August 16, 2022, for the Integrity Engineer role. The interview followed a Group Discussion and was conducted by a panel of three interviewers, focusing on technical, behavioral, and communication skills.
The technical segment, which lasted approximately 15 minutes, involved discussions about the candidate's winter training, minor project, research paper, and an ongoing major project (development of a humanoid robot). Questions were posed from Strength of Materials, including "What are the structures that you see in your real life and how do they fail?"
Following the technical questions, a guesstimate problem was presented: estimating "the number of traffic signals in my home town." The candidate successfully provided 3-4 assumptions to arrive at an estimate.
Behavioral questions were a significant part of the interview, with a focus on teamwork. Examples include: "What would you do if a person in your team is too aggressive and does not do any work?" and "What do you think about the advantages of working in a team?" Other behavioral inquiries included: "Is there any case when you have pitched an idea which proved to be successful during your project?", "We don't make robots here, whatever you learnt will not work here, then why should we choose you and why you wanted to join ExxonMobil?", "We have different roles like technical, management etc, which role would you like to prefer?", and "You have so much patience, tell us a case when you have scolded someone."
The candidate noted that the interviewers prioritized behavioral and communication skills over purely technical knowledge. The entire interview lasted 45 minutes, with results delivered within an hour. The overall experience was highly positive, as the interviewers took the time to explain company concepts in detail when the candidate asked questions.
