Experience:

This was an interview experience for a Software Development Engineer position at Capgemini, focusing on full-stack development, cloud technologies, and scalable enterprise solutions. The process spanned about 3 weeks and consisted of 5 challenging rounds.

Round 1: Online Assessment (90 minutes)
Conducted on HackerRank, this round focused on DSA and programming concepts. Key questions included:

  • Implement a modified version of merge sort where elements at even indices are sorted in ascending order and odd indices in descending order.
  • Design an efficient algorithm to find the longest palindromic substring in a given string.
  • Given a binary tree, print all paths from root to leaf nodes where the sum equals a given number.
The candidate solved all three problems, attributing success to preparation with LeetCode medium/hard problems.

Round 2: Technical Screening (45 minutes)
This round was conducted by a senior developer over Microsoft Teams, focusing on fundamentals and problem-solving approach. Notable questions included:

  • Explain the difference between process and thread, with real-world examples.
  • How would you design a real-time notification system for a large-scale e-commerce platform?
  • Describe your approach to handling race conditions in multi-threaded applications.

Round 3: Core Technical Interview (90 minutes)
This was the most challenging round, conducted by two senior technical architects. Key areas covered included:

  • Deep dive into my recent project involving microservices.
  • Live coding: Implement a thread-safe singleton pattern.
  • System design: Design a distributed cache system.
  • Debugging exercise: Find and fix issues in a Spring Boot application with performance bottlenecks.

Round 4: Architecture & Design Round (60 minutes)
A principal architect led this round, focusing on system design and architecture principles. Major discussion points included:

  • Design a scalable URL shortening service (like bit.ly).
  • Explain SOLID principles with practical examples from my past projects.
  • How would you migrate a monolithic application to microservices?
  • Discussion about handling eventual consistency in distributed systems.

Round 5: HR & Cultural Fit (45 minutes)
The final round with HR focused on cultural alignment and expectations. Key questions were:

  • How do you handle disagreements in a team?
  • Describe a situation where you had to meet a tight deadline.
  • What are your salary expectations and notice period?
  • Why Capgemini specifically?
A week after the final round, the candidate received a competitive offer with excellent benefits.
