This interview experience for a Software Engineer New Grad position at Visa took place in October 2024 and resulted in a selection. The process lasted one week and was conducted virtually.
Online Assessment Round: This round included multiple-choice questions (MCQs) covering Computer Science fundamentals and two coding questions. The specific coding questions were: "Remove characters from the first string not present in the second" and "Check if a string of parentheses is valid without using a stack." Other questions covered topics like REST API, Docker and its need, Docker images, AWS services, handling corrupted image datasets, and preprocessing steps for image and text datasets.
Interview Round 1 (Technical): This round started with an introduction. Technical questions included: explaining multiprocessing, multitasking, and multiprogramming; types of schedulers in OS and which is most important; types of machine learning algorithms; how LSTM works and its advantages; if LLMs can be used for supervised learning; and Hadoop Ecosystem components. Problem-solving questions were: "Given an integer N, find how many locks are open after N passes of toggling," "Print level order traversal of a binary tree with alternate levels reversed," and "Find the N'th biggest number in an array." The interviewer also asked about Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) and its consequences, and the candidate's operating system and its kernel type.
Interview Round 2 (Technical): This round also began with an introduction. Questions covered: the most impactful project worked on; the difference between monolithic and microservices architecture and when to use monolithic; the OS booting process; SDLC and STLC; a scenario about maintaining existing code with an imminent deadline; handling a project with unfamiliar technology; and transitioning from college to corporate life.
Interview Round 3 (Technical + HR): The final round included a mix of technical and HR questions. The interviewer asked "Why do you want to join VISA?" along with other behavioral questions.
