Round 1: Phone Screen (45 mins)
Behavioral questions about leadership and project ownership. Followed by a coding question: "Implement a rate limiter for a distributed system." The candidate discussed token bucket and leaky bucket algorithms, then coded a simple in-memory version with concurrency considerations.
Round 2: Onsite - System Design 1 (60 mins)
Design "YouTube's live streaming infrastructure." This was a deep dive into ingest, encoding, distribution (CDN), low-latency playback, chat, and fault tolerance. Focused on various components, data flow, and scaling challenges for millions of concurrent viewers.
Round 3: Onsite - Coding 1 (45 mins)
Graph algorithm problem: "Given a list of video dependencies, find a valid order to process them (topological sort) and detect cycles." The candidate coded Kahn's algorithm (BFS-based topological sort) and discussed DFS-based detection, as well as handling large graphs and distributed processing.
Round 4: Onsite - System Design 2 (60 mins)
Design "YouTube's comment section, including moderation and real-time updates." This involved database choices, real-time communication (WebSockets), spam detection, and scaling for high write/read throughput. Discussed eventual consistency vs. strong consistency trade-offs.
Round 5: Onsite - Coding 2 (45 mins)
Concurrency/Multithreading problem: "Implement a thread-safe producer-consumer queue with bounded capacity." Used semaphores and mutexes. Discussed potential deadlocks and starvation issues.
Round 6: Onsite - Hiring Manager/Leadership (60 mins)
Deep dive into leadership experiences, mentorship, conflict resolution, strategic thinking, and influencing product direction. Questions included: "Tell me about a time you led a project that failed and what you learned," and "How do you handle disagreements with product managers?" Also discussed career aspirations and fit with the team's vision.
Tips: For Staff+ roles, system design needs to be very strong, covering multiple aspects of distributed systems. Coding needs to be flawless, and behavioral rounds are critical for assessing leadership and impact. Be ready to articulate your experience and decisions at a high level.
