This on-campus interview process for a System Engineer role at Yahoo started with a pen and paper test. This round comprised about 30 MCQs, with 4 aptitude questions and 26 technical questions. The technical questions covered Computer Networks, DBMS, Unix, Data Structures, Algorithms, and C/C++ output questions.
The first technical round included questions like printing all amicable pairs within a given range, shell scripting for monitoring memory/CPU usage and killing background processes if thresholds are exceeded, and printing the top 5 OS and browsers used.
The second technical round focused on networking (e.g., 3-way handshake, SNMP), Unix-based questions (boot procedure, Linux login, password storage), and OOPS concepts (how multiple inheritance is achieved in Java). The interviewer also asked about the candidate's projects and motivation to work at Yahoo.
The third technical round was a design question: "How would you design a system which would localize web content for a particular region, i.e., display a web page in Kannada in Bangalore and Marathi in Pune, etc." The interviewers focused on the candidate's approach, considering factors like cost, space, latency, and problem analysis.
The interviews were described as comfortable, with interviewers focusing more on the approach than just the output and efficiency of the code.
