Topics Asked: Data Structures, Algorithms, JavaScript (DOM manipulation, built-in functions, Promises), React (basics, component lifecycle, hooks), Machine Coding, System Design (high-level application design, planning, component design, data flow, best practices, performance optimization, testing, monitoring)
The candidate went through four rounds for the SDE-1 Frontend role.
Round 1 (Online Test): Received a HackerRank link with 5 problems: 2 DSA, 2 JavaScript, and 1 React machine coding question.
Round 2 (Technical Interview - 3rd Party): This round focused on JavaScript and React basics. The candidate was also asked to solve a LeetCode question. Specific questions included DOM manipulation, built-in functions for arrays/strings, and a code snippet regarding promise completion in a for loop (optimization). The machine coding task involved creating a box in CodeSandbox, showing a circle at the cursor position on hover, then modifying it to show the circle only on click while tracking cursor position, and optimizing it (using `useRef` for tracking).
Round 3 (Technical Interview - Senior Frontend Engineer): This round was taken by a senior frontend engineer. Questions covered React basics like component lifecycle and hooks.
Round 4 (Hiring Manager Round): The interviewer asked how the candidate would approach building an application from the ground up, covering aspects like planning, component design, data flow, best code practices, design patterns, performance optimization, testing, and monitoring. The candidate felt they lacked experience in monitoring and testing.
Overall Experience and Result: Despite the rounds generally going well, the candidate was rejected, believing it was due to their performance in the monitoring and testing aspects of the system design discussion.
