The candidate applied for a Staff Engineer II role in the Gurgaon team (a small team of less than 15 engineers) via LinkedIn. The entire process took close to 2 months, with rounds spaced 1-2 weeks apart.
Hiring Manager Round: This call was with a Senior Director of the Global Engineering team based in Singapore. The discussion focused on understanding the candidate's current role, future growth path/expectations, and explaining the new role, including aspects like potential travel (20-50%) and less coding in consultant roles for engineers. Surface-level technical discussions on projects also occurred.
Live Coding Round: Conducted by a Senior Engineer (recently promoted to Staff), with a junior engineer observing. The problem statement was based on strings and 1D arrays, described as "quite simple." The platform chosen was not ideal, offering only Python, Java, and Javascript, which was not communicated in advance. The candidate, a Ruby Engineer, coded the solution in Java, which ran without issues.
Technical Assessment (System Design / HLD): This round was with another Staff Engineer II. The problem involved designing a blob storage platform similar to Dropbox or Google Drive. The candidate had not solved this specific problem before and approached it from first principles.
Behavioral Round: This was the candidate's first behavioral interview. It was held with an Expert Partner from the APAC region. Although scheduled for 45 minutes, it was cut short to 30 minutes due to a client meeting. The interviewer had 21 years of experience, with over 16 years at Bain.
The candidate cleared all five rounds but was ultimately rejected due to a single vacancy and high competition.
