The candidate applied for an SDE 1 off-campus position at Navi.
Round 1: Coding Assignment. After an initial call from HR, the candidate received a coding assignment. The requirements included coding in Java, providing working code, proper domain modeling and design (not necessarily optimized), separation of concerns, extensibility, and writing necessary unit tests. Problems included finding the difference between two strings (characters to add/remove to get a target string) and determining if adding an edge creates a cycle in a list of edges, also identifying if it forms a forest.
Round 2: Face to Face (1 hour - DSA). This was a DSA round. After a quick introduction, the interviewer directly posed questions. The specific problem mentioned was to find the maximum area of a histogram. The candidate implemented it and provided a dry run with one stack, having solved this question previously.
Round 3: Hiring Manager (45 minutes). The hiring manager explained their work and asked questions like "Why Navi?" and "What do you expect from Navi?". After the candidate's introduction, they were given a Google Doc and asked to solve the maximum area of histogram problem again. The candidate also asked about qualities a fresher should possess to join Navi.
Round 4: Cultural Fit Round. This round was conducted by a department head with extensive experience. The interviewer asked about the candidate's background and then presented difficult situation-based questions. The candidate felt the interviewer was giving negative vibes and was not satisfied with the answers. The candidate expressed excitement about the opportunity, but the interviewer responded, "we will see about it." The candidate was ultimately rejected.
