The selection process for the Developer Role at ION Group consisted of 6 rounds: 1 online assessment and 5 interviews.
1. Online Assessment (HackerRank): This round was hosted on HackerRank and included approximately 10 MCQs and 2 coding questions. The coding problems were of easy to medium difficulty, with one being string-related and the other a Dynamic Programming (DP) problem. The candidate solved the first question completely and the second partially.
2. First Interview Round (Technical): This round started with a detailed discussion of projects mentioned in the candidate's resume. Following this, the interviewer delved into Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts. A question was posed about implementing a phone directory, where the Trie data structure was expected. Basic Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) questions were also asked, along with a DBMS question on the difference between MySQL and MongoDB.
3. Second Interview Round (Technical/Puzzles/Coding): This round was puzzle and coding-based, covering core computer science subjects. After a project discussion, the interviewer asked about the candidate's favorite subjects and various types of data structures. Specific questions included: "What is a dynamic array, and how is it different from a static array?", "Code to allocate memory on the heap?", advanced questions about STL, Tries, Maps, time complexities, hashing concepts, different codes to detect and remove loops in a linked list, implementation of a Vector class with its functionalities, and approaches to finding the third largest number in a large dataset. Advanced OOPs concepts and some basic OS questions were also covered.
4. Third Interview Round (Case Study): This round involved a case study. The interviewer presented a scenario, such as helping a company like Big Bazaar increase its profit during the Covid times, or the IKEA Group with cost and revenue data, and asked for strategies.
5. Fourth Interview Round (Resume-based/Technical): This round was primarily focused on the candidate's resume. Detailed discussions occurred around projects and college club activities. Some HR-like questions were asked, but it was not a dedicated HR round. Advanced C++ concepts, such as lambda functions and indirect questions about Smart Pointers, were also part of this round.
6. Fifth Interview Round (Global Head/Country Head - Behavioral): This was an online interaction, described as short and informal. It began with an introduction, followed by an explanation of projects. Questions about travel experiences and aspirations outside India were also asked. This round aimed to assess confidence and communication skills. In some cases, it was a group meeting with the country head, where candidates introduced themselves and answered abstract questions like "what is success according to you?".
Overall Experience: The process was comprehensive, testing both technical prowess and soft skills. The candidate was among the selected few.
